Fairly sighed. "You don't even know us." she said, getting out of the car and slamming the door, not even waiting for Baily.

Baily sighed and looked at Damon. "Don't mind her. She's more direct than I am..."

Damon frowned, afraid he'd said something wrong. Had he? He didn't think he had... "I'm afraid I don't know what I said to upset her," he admitted to Baily, following her friend.

She walked next to him. "This really is a lot to take in in one night. I mean, a few minutes ago, vampires didn't exist to us and now we're the only ones who can have vampire babies... that's a lot.."

"you do have a point," he agreed with a nod. "You seem to be taking it quite well."

"I'm more open minded than she is... a little bit more cool minded. She tends to get angry quickly, while I sort of keep it in. Do breedmates really fall in love with you guys? Is it just like human love?" she asked.

"I'm not the one you should ask about that," he told her gently. "I've never experienced it before, so I couldn't tell you. Nikolai has, but his mate has long been dead," he said somberly.

"What happened?" she asked. "Do you know?"

Damon nodded. "She was taken while we were out on patrol. We looked everywhere for her for nights, as long as we could stay out. She finally came back, but she was a Minion," he murmured darkly. "He had to put a blade to his own mate's throat."

"That's horrible..." she said softly.

He nodded. "It wasn't easy for him. It took him at least a hundred hears to get himself out of the depression. But he's still affected when she's brought up," he said gently.

"Good to know... I mean, not that she died or that he's hurt, but that I shouldn't bring her up." She said.

Damon nodded. "You can bring her up. Just don't be surprised if his mood suddenly changes."

She nodded and then sighed as they reached her dorm. "You gonna stand outside and keep guard or whatever?" she asked.

"If you don't want me in your room, then I will," he said.

She shrugged. "Uhm..."

"how long are we doing to be staying with you?" Fairly asked, opening the door.

"Bring everything. I'll help you carry it all."

"Everything? So we're moving out?" She asked.

"We can't give you our full protection here."

Fairly sighed and walked back into the room. "Great..." she mumbled, grumbing about tuition and costs under her breath as she threw random things in her bag.

Baily sighed. "I think you might want to stay out here. We'll get you if anything happens or if we need your help."

Damon nodded and stood outside their door, leaning against the wall.

After a little while, Fairly opened the door, holding out two duffle bags. "You said you'd help carry things to the truck?" She asked.

Damon nodded and took her bags. "I'll be right back," he promised and went to place the bags in the van.

Fairly sighed and looked at Baily. "You like him, don't you?"

Baily looked up from the box she was putting her stuff in. "I think I do, yes."

"Even though he drinks blood?"

She nodded. "Yeah, even though he drinks blood. He's not like other guys who try to lie to me to get into my pants. He's honestly trying to protect us." she said.

Fairly sighed but then snuffed. "Do you smell that?"

"Smell what?" Baily was in the middle of stipping her bed and putting the spread in the box.

"smoke..."

Damon could hear them, though he said nothing. He could also smell the smoke. He growled, his fangs slowly extending from his gums as his eyes began to turn amber from their usual blue. He sniffed the air, trying to see where exactly it was coming from.

Suddenly the fire alarms went off and the water spouts on the ceiling began pouring water. Fairly flinched and went back into her rooom, shutting the door as people flooded into the hallways to get out of the building.
