Deryk, feeling her warmth, wrapped his arms around her and relaxing, sleeping more comfortably.

Kat smiled gently, kissing the top of his head. She heard the bustle of nurses changing her IV bags, checking the monitors, the like. She closed her eyes, drifting into a light sleep that was soon interrupted by one of her son's doctors.

Deryk opened his eyes reluctantly and sat up, looking at the doctor.

Kat opened her eyes and a hand automatically flew up to her mouth. They only sent the younger doctors in with bad news. "Oh god.. Please..." The doctor sighed, looking at the two finally. "Your son died last night... His lungs, they just gave out... I'm sorry."

Deryk stared at him, his expression a list between: hurt, disbelief, anger, and despair. "You couldn't do anything," he asked in a near monotone voice, his lips a tight line, which they only did when he was contemplating killing someone.

Kat fell into a warped world. Her hand found Deryk's the moment he spoke. She knew what he was feeling, she'd only seen him this way once before though: when her parents had kicked her out. "Love, please relax." Tears stained her cheeks, but she spoke head-strong and stable. "Thank you, doctor, for tellin gus. But, if you would please leave now..." Her eyes were closed, nobody could see the near-black color of her eyes now. She felt she had died, that nothing could help this pain go away.

Deryk looked at her as the doctor left, his expression no longer angry, but sad and hurt. He leaned his forehead on hers, trying not to let his tears fall.

The moment she heard the door close, she collapsed. She had no idea what had been holding her so strongly while the doctor was there, but now it was gone. And she fell against Deryk like a heavy weight, her eyes closed. "Cry... It's okay." She knew he needed to, they were at that level where she knew exactly what he needed, and vice versa. Right now, they both needed to cry and mourn. Their first child had died.

Deryk held her close, letting his tears fall. He couldn't blame the doctors, or anyone really. He blamed himself; if he hadn't worn a condom those first few times, then she wouldn't have gotten pregnant, which wouldn't have gotten her kicked out of her house, which wouldn't have made their baby be born early, which wouldn't have resulted in his death. He murmured apologies to her repeatedly through his tears, praying she wouldn't say it wasn't his fault. It was, and he knew it. He was the cause of all her pain, both past, present, and future. She didn't deserve him; he knew that now, more than anything. She deserved someone much better than him.

Kat held him against her, her tears stopping as she felt his start to fall. When he started to murmur apologies, she took his chin in her hand, wiping his tears off his face with her thumbs. God, he thought it was his fault! How could it possibly be his fault? Other than the condom thing. It's not like she was on birth control... And she'd been at it for a while. "Babe, stop blaming yourself... I'm lucky to have you.. I'm lucky that we got prgenant, I'm lucky that you still love me... I'm lucky to have you, even if the ride's been bumpy as hell... So please, for me, stop blaming yourself. It was a premature birth. It's rare that a baby lives through the first two months... Blame nature, hate God, just don't beat yourself up..."

Deryk shook his head. "Kat, it is my fault. You got kicked out of your house because of me, how does that make you lucky? You deserve so much more than me, Kat. I've hurt you so much," he trailed off, shaking his head and biting his lip.

Kat slid into his lap, taking his head in her hands. "Deryk, look at me... I may not be in the best shape right now, but damn it, I love you. I've loved you for so long it's insane. I've loved you since we met, okay? So the fact that I got kicked out doesn't matter to me, because we're still together. The fact that you got me pregnant isn't bad, because it shows me how much you want to be with me... And beating yourself up over the death of John depresses me because I don't deserve you... And that's the truth."

"How in the hell do you think you don't deserve me," he asked her, honestly wondering why she thought that. He was the one who left without warning. He was the one who hurt her.

She sighed, biting her lip. "Because you're special and honest and trusting and a safe foundation and I don't deserve you because I don't deserve those things... I've never wanted them so badly before. I've never felt incomplete without security.. And now I do and I feel like I'm stealing you from someone who needs it... Who needs you... Because I love you and want you for my own like nothing I've ever known before..."

He lifted her chin so she'd look in his eyes. "The only way in hell that you wouldn't deserve me would be because you deserve someone much better. I love you, Kat, more than anything. More than my own life. I'd do anything for you, and I mean anything."

Kat sighed, curling up in his arms like the battered girl she truly was. People could say she was a woman because of the fact that she'd given birth, but it was still so far from the truth for her. She felt more confused and afraid than ever. "I love Deryk..."

He held her close, wanting to hide her away from all the pain that could ever reach her. "I love you, too, Kitty," he whispered. "So much."

Kat sighed, closing her eyes. She fell into a frozen sleep, sometimes not breathing for a minute or so... She had the nurses scared to death when they came in to check on her, but they realized it was just the stress and depression affecting her.

Deryk held her close, panicking when she didn't breathe, and relaxing again when she did.

She 'slept' for a little while longer, her eyelashes fluttering open after a while.
