"Once you finish your lunch?" she mumbled, looking over at his empty plate. By now her mother would be getting back from her tennis lesson and her father would be coming home to have lunch just as he did every afternoon due to his special diet. "I'm sure that we can just catch them if we leave now." she mumbled, a bit reluctant.

"Ok" he said, nodding as he got up and payed for the meal

He walked out beside her, and followed her lead to her house

A soft sigh passed her lips as she walked out of the diner and over to her car. Her parents would never say a rude word to her or even threaten her but she knew that deep down it would kill them. They had given her everything she had ever wanted and still she had gone out and gotten pregnant. Getting into her car, she drove off quietly, not even bothering to turn on the radio.

He sighed and looked out the window, wondering how he would explain this to Serena's parents

It had already taken a lot out of Serena to explain that she was no longer with her boyfriend of three years whom her parentd had actually liked a lot despite his selective intelligence in certain areas. Once they reached her house, she sighed and nodded her head. "Here we are..." she mumbled, though he would have already known since he'd been here before.

"Ok...let's do this" he said, sighing

"They won't hurt you." she assured him forn the second time in the past hour. Sighing, Serena walked with him into the house. There was a CD playing, though it was bland music, almost the kind that would be playing in an elevator or a dentist's office. Walking up the stair case, she could see her mother in the living room, flipping through a magazine. "Mom," she said, walking over to her. Her mother looked up and smiled, though she was surprised to see that her daughter had a boy with her.

"Hello, Hunny," her mother said, hugging her daughter. "Who is this?" she offered Dan a smile, though she was a bit cautious. She felt that it was too soon for Serena to be bringing home a boyfriend after only a few weeks. Three years was a long time and she knew that Serena had genuinly loved her ex.

Serena bit her lip, "We need to talk, Mom." As she said this, the door opened and she could hear her father downstairs and sighed once more. "All of us."

Her father came in

"Hey hunny how are you?" he asked, hugging her gently

"Who is this? It's kinda early for a new boyfriend" he said, seeing Dan

Dan caughed and scratched th back of his head

Serena really wished that she had considered this a few weeks ago before inviting Dan into her bed. "Oh, don't worry," she stuttered, "he isn't my boyfriend." Coughing and taking a seat on the sofa, she looked over at her parents before dropping her gaze from them. Where could she even begin to explain? "Mom, Dad..." she breathed in and looked up at him. "Something has come up..." With that she slowly and painfully explained to them the current situation.

They soon took the whole converstion to the couch, and Dan sat next to her as she began to explain things to her parents.

"I know that this isn't what any of us had in mind," she sighed, looking down at her lap and fiddling around with a few stray locks of hair. What else could she really say? After being in a long and monogamous (up until her boyfriend had cheated on her) relationship she had gone out, gotten drunk and had unprotected sex with a guy whom she hardly knew. There was no way to sugar coat it or make it look like a blessing in disguise.

Her mother was silent. Her father looked in Dan's direction

"So......you knocked up my daughter?" he asked him

Dan sighed, nodding

"What exactly do you do? How are you going to support my daughter?" he asked him

"I....am a pianist" he said

"Ah......so you play music....you take the easy way out as opposed to actually working?" his father said

Dan's composure was calm, but he was a bit infuriated by her father's remark

"Daddy," Serena said sharply, a bit surprised by her own boldness considering the position she had put herself in. "We aren't going to get anywhere by insulting one another." Sighing, she brushed some of her hair from her eyes. "I was planning on getting a job on my own, as well as finishing the rest of the school year online." She was quiet and sighed. "I heard from some people that if you take school on line you can finish a couple of months before everyone else. I'll be graduated high school a few months early and then I can apply for colleges online."

Dan was expecting a bit of insulting from the part of Serena's parents, so he wasn't particularly shocked at her father lashing out against him. However he was particularly surprised at how Serena stood up for him and herself to her parents. He was proud that she had a backbone

"I also work full time, and I'm getting my Bachelor's Degree in Music at the Conservatoire" he said to her father

Serena mostly stood up for him because she knew that no matter what her parents wouldn't blame or insult her even though it was partly her fault. "I know that this is a big responsibility and it isn't going to be easy," she said softly, looking at her parents seriously. "I know that I have to give up a lot of things..." she sighed, "A lot of things that I really wanted to do..." she mumbled underneath her breath, "But I'm having this baby."

He father slouched as he ran his fingers through her hair and sighed.

"We'll support you in any way we can honey" he said

"But accept the consequences of your actions, and don't look back" he said

Serena sighed and knew that it was easier said than done. Resting her head on her father's shoulder she quietly thanked him and then got up. "It's getting late. I should probably drive Dan back to his place. I promise that I'll come straight home afterwards." she assured her parents, getting up. They were dissapointed in her and that killed her.

"Thank you for your time" Dan said politely and turned away and opened the door for Serena

Serena also had stood up for him because she felt sorry for the situation she had put him in. While he didn't exactly seem like the person who had a family on his mind right away she knew eventually he would want one and had probably not wanted to start it like this. After bidding her parents goodbye she walked with him to her car.

"So.....thank you for the lift" he said, as they both got in the car

"I owe you this much." she said quietly, not looking up from the steering wheel. Sighing, she took her keys out of her purse and then started the car. She wanted things to be like how they had been a month ago when she'd still had her boyfriend and she hadn't ruined not only her life but Dan's. When they reached his apartment, she sighed and then stopped the car. "I'm sorry." she said quietly after a long silence between the two.

Serena sighed and then briefly looked over at him before briefly reaching out for his hand. She whimped out at the last second and pulled her hand back, looking away from him. "I know that this isn't what you wanted from a one night stand and I'm sorry for taking you homr with me that night and into my bedroom."

"I'm sorry for not wearing protection, and causing the next nine months of pain for you" he said

"I'll help in any way I can" he said

She sighed. "I understand that you'll probably resent me for this but please don't take it out on the baby. No matter what, please try and love it as much as you can." Brushing some hair from her eyes, she finally looked over at him and then sighed. "I guess you should leave now. I promised my parents that I'd try and come home as soon as possible. I think I owe them that much."
