Deryk held onto Kat's hand as she was laid into the bed in the birthing room, worried as to why it was so soon. "You okay," he asked her worriedly, pulling her hair back into a loose, comfortable ponytail for her to help keep her cool.

Kat grimaced, groaning as another contraction showed up. "Mhm..." She spoke through gritted teeth. Despite the ponytail, she was already sweating like crazy..."

He kissed her forehead, holding onto her hand worriedly. He had no idea what to do besides help her not to stress out.

(time skip)

A good few hours later, Kat laid her head back with a steady and slow breath sliding out of her mouth. "De...Deryk..." She'd just given birth to a 4 pound 6 ounce baby boy, who was just about the size of one and a half of her hands.

Deryk kissed her forehead, holding onto her hand as the doctors cleaned off their baby and made sure he was healthy enough to be held by his parents. "You did great, Kitty," he whispered. "How are you feeling?" He thought he played off being proud and relieved that their baby was born pretty well. In truth, he was scared out of his mind; the boy was so small and two months premature. He hoped he'd be okay.

Kat breathed slowly and deeply, nodding some. "Mmm.... I'm fine babe... I'm just kinda tired is all..." She closed her eyes and laid her head back, squeezing Deryk's hand as they listened to the doctor's talk. She heard them say that they wouldn't be able to hold their son for a long while. A tear brimmed her eyelid and slid through her lashes, caressing her cheek.

Deryk nodded sadly as he heard the news and wiped her tear away softly. "It'll be alright," he whispered, wiping her forehead with a damp wash cloth to try and cool her down.

Kat swallowed, taking his hand away from the washcloth and her forehead, pressing his fingers to her lips softly. "I love you Deryk... So much baby..."

"I love you, too, Kitty," he whispered softly and kissed her forehead, then her lips softly.

Kat sighed, kissing him back gently. "I love you too sweetheart." She couldn't believe it. She wouldn't be able to hold her son. She watched as they left the room with her son, taking him to the baby-nursery to place him in one of those clear boxes where they put the babies that were unhealthy. "Deryk," she spoke again once they were alone, "Why? Why'd he come so soon?"

Deryk watched sadly as they took him to put him in an incubator. "I don't know, baby," he whispered sadly. "But I'm gonna find out," he promised.

Kat chuckled sadly, sitting up some. "Babe... There has to have been a reason... Maybe we really just didn't know what we were getting into. But we'll be okay. We all will, or at least I hope so..."

Deryk nodded, helping her sit up so she was comfortable. "We will be okay," he said it as if he was sure. He wanted to think positive. After all, that's what he'd been doing for years before he came back to his hometown, and everything had worked out like he'd wanted, and then some.

Kat nodded, kissing his cheek. "Everything." A nurse came in and gave her a sedative, which was obvious because almost immediately Kat settled back into the bed, curling up on her side a tad. "I love you Deryk... I'm glad you listened to my song every night..."

Deryk kissed her forehead, stroking her hair. "I love you, too, sweetheart," he murmured softly. "Sweet dreams, my love."

Kat fell asleep soon after, her murmured "I love you too," coming out slurred.

Deryk stroked her hair as she slept, not wanting to leave her.

Kat slept well based on the fact that her body had not fully come to terms with the fact that she'd just given birth.

Deryk sat down in a nearby chair, his hand never letting go of hers.

Kat awoke when the doctor walked in, though she stayed as if she was asleep as the doctor turned to Deryk. "I'm sorry to say this, but Katarina and yourself won't be able to hold your son for a long while. His immune system, his body as a whole even, isn't yet strong enough to fight off all the dangers even a newborn faces. His immune system would be attacked with all sorts of bacteria and viruses, killing him near instantly... We figured you wouldn't want to take that chance so he's in an incubator right now..."

Deryk nodded slowly. "Do you have any idea why he was born so early, doc," he asked in a whisper, not wanting to wake up Kat.

The doctor shrugged, sighing. "From observations of Katarina, whom I believe is your girlfriend, she seems perfectly healthy. There were no signs of trauma with your son, so it was probably just a hormone spike... Her body most likely tricked itself into thinking that she was ready to give birth, thinking it was 9 months not 7..."

Deryk pondered that for a minute. "Would it still be safe for her to have more kids down the road," he asked, his voice still not raising above a whisper.

Kat grimaced, closing her eyes tighter as she waited for the doctor's response. He smiled some, nodding. "Oh, of course... Though I would wait a few years before you try again as this is probably a rather dramatic experience for her..."

Deryk nodded, relieved to hear that, though not so relieved to have her upset like that. "Please do whatever you can to keep our boy alive," he begged in a whisper.
