"What would we talk about," he asked.

"I have absolutely no idea." she said, smiling and chuckling at him.

"Why are you chuckling at me," he asked, knowing he probably would never know the answer.

"I'm not chuckling at you. Just that I slowed down with the intention to talk but don't have the slightest idea what to talk about." she said, looking at him.

"Ah. Understandable," Niko nodded.

She nodded, smiling at him. "I'm sorry. I didn't exactly think that through."

Niko shrugged. "I don't care. Don't apologize."

"For being a vampire, you talk pretty modernly." she said. "I always pictured you guys as talking a bit more... i don't know... with more vocabulary."

"Would you rather me speak in another language," he asked with a smirk. "We adapt as times change."

"how many languages can you speak?" she asked, smiling at him.

"Very many. My native tongue is German. Both Damon and I grew up in Germany."

"what brought you here?" she asked.

"We had to get away from our homeplace. Humans would notice if we stayed the same age all the time, and we didn't want to keep living in the darkhaven there."

"How long have you been in the darkhaven here?"

"We aren't located in the darkhaven. It's off about five miles from here. We help protect it, though."

"But how long have you been here?" she asked again.

"About seventy-five years or so," he shrugged. "We stay underground mostly, so we're not that big of a risk."

"Wow... Guess that isn't that long when you've lived for thousands of years." she chuckled.

"A blink of an eye," Niko agreed with a nod.

"do you remember being human?"

"I was never human. I was born a vampire. There is no possible way to turn a human into a vampire."

She nodded. "so, the babies that I have will be vampire?" she asked.

"If you become a vampire's mate, yes."

"What about Baily?" she asked.

"If she chooses Damon as her mate, which I think might happen at this point, she'll have vampire babies, too."
